CHILDREN LEARN IN DIFFERENT WAYS

CHILDREN LEARN IN DIFFERENT WAYS

Several years ago, I read about a woman who had six rules about raising children while she was still a single woman. The woman in question came up with some rules, from observing parents with their children, which she termed as her strategy for raising kids. She got those rules from observation not experience. Several years later, she got married and had six children. She later wrote that when she was not a mother, she had six rules about raising kids but now, she has six kids with no rules.

The moral of the story, when it comes to raising kids, there is no one size fits all. Children should be brought up according to how they have been configured by the maker and according to how their temperaments are.
In all ramifications of life, the ways and manners in which children should be raised, should be tailored to suit the child in question. It is not good parenting to compare the behaviour or developmental process of one child to the other. Socially, physically, mentally, educationally and spiritually, children should be encouraged to learn and develop at their own pace and time.

When we want to talk about the educational aspect a child’s development, from observation, research and experience, children, especially those under the age of ten, learn in different ways. These ways can be categorized into visuals, touching, and reciting, but not limited to this three methods. These categories are not all encompassing, there is no add and fast rules about it. While some children learn by one of the methods mentioned above, others learn by the combination of two or all or some other methods.
Children who learn by visuals are those who love to see objects or things shown to them when they are being taught or when learning. While being taught in school, these group of children assimilate better by looking at object(s) of the lesson. The children in these category tilt more towards the modern way of learning which leans towards using pictorials, objects and images for educational purposes.

By touching and feeling, some kids learns by having contacts with objects of lesson. The children in these category learn by touching which has a way of resonating with their thinking, reasoning and assimilating process. They are the one who are usually restless in places of study, they like moving around and touching things being used in teaching.

Some children learn by the way of rhyming. These are the one who will compose all lessons into songs and sing them out loud. These group learn by continuous hearing of the lesson.
Like earlier stated, there is no one size fits all, however, children should not be conditioned to learn in one certain kind of way. Parents and tutors have the primary assignment to observe and know how best a child learns so as not to put them in the box of conformity. All children are gifted and intelligent and they all learn in different manner and in their own way.
